Refresh // Rework

Old meets new

This home hails from my hometown, Williamston. It’s currently for sale (as of July 21, 2022). After living in a historic area in the Cincinnati area for 7 years, I have come to appreciate and love old homes. While this home has been mostly stripped of its old charm, you can still find its large windows and high ceilings. Unfortunately, the home also has a poorly planned addition and a mishmash of materials and design not fitting with the age of the home.

This redesign creates a logical flow, introduces cohesive design and timeless materials like wood floors. The result is a calming city retreat with plenty of room to spread out

If you want to know more about what I do and why, you can read a little more here.

If you’re interested in the holistic strategy behind the redesign, read on. A reimagined floorplan

Cumbersome layout

Currently, the only way to access the family room addition is via a small walkway through the kitchen.

Easy Flow + Transition

The proposed layout converts the half bath to a full and relocates it to the entry area. This allows a central walkway that flows easily from the original home into the new addition.

Current Layout

Presently, the house uses the space just inside the front door as a living area. This small room directs traffic to the front bedrooms, the second story, as well as to the back of the house. This busy area of the home would be better served as a standalone entry, though, it currently has a fair amount of wasted space. By relocating the half bath and turning it into a full, the extra square footage is better utilized and also opens up the path to the new addition. This revised plan with a wide entry and arched doorways, creates beautiful transitions between the rooms and allows for a harmonious flow through the house.

Upgraded Heart of the Home

A cantilevered bump-out addition makes room for a cozy window built-in seating for the dining area. The extra windows flood the dining room and kitchen with natural light and offer a view of the beautiful courtyard from both the dining room and kitchen. This also allows extra space for an unobstructed flow of traffic to the addition.
